However, it is very clear in the second round that JuanMa is going to win the fight. But that one lucky punch 12seconds into the end of the first round could have made a difference.

Arguably, the undercard of Concepcion/Santiago is the best fight of the night as observed by boxing fans. With the win, Bernabe Concepcion finally gets a shot at the title being held by Juan Manuel Lopez.

Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao, who manages Concepcion, was also in attendance to witness the entire card and to show his support to his Filipino compatriots.

Also included are the bouts between bantamweight titlist Fernando Montiel against Michael Domingo. All bouts are only available via pay-per-view. It would be Abe’s fourth fight in the featherweight division and we, his fans, are definitely rooting for him. We hope that this young fighter will come out more polished after his disappointing show against Luevano.

Who is Mario Santiago

Mario, nicknamed is Principe Ponce, is a Puerto Rican super featherweight southpaw who fought Steven Luevano in June 2008 and had a split draw. After his draw with Luevano, Santiago won his last two fights against Gilberto Sanchez Leon and Morris Chule with unanimous decision and split decision, respectively. His last fight was on October 17, 2009 at Whataburger Field in Texas.

Santiago’s only lost is with his first fight against Héctor Velázquezon July 28, 2007. Prior to his lost, he had knocked out his last 8 opponents. And after an 8-month hiatus after the lost, he went back into the ring by knocking out Edel Ruiz in the first round of their February 1, 2008 fight. And from August 2006 to present, Mario has been holding his Caribbean Boxing Federation Featherweight Title.

He was disqualified by Referee Jay Nady when the 21-year-old Pacquiao protege threw two punches after the bell sounded at the end of Round 7. It dropped the Mexican-American into the canvas when the current champion has already lowered his hands and was preparing to touch gloves with the Filipino rising star.

In an interview with Freddie Roach on the post-fight, he said that the punches were never intentional. He called it “Late Punches” but he agreed that the disqualification was justified. Ring side doctors ruled that Luevano cannot continue due to the flagrant punches.

Steven Luevano is a known distance fighter. He controlled the tempo of the match opting to fight outside rather than mixed it up with Concepcion’s brawling style. It must have been the reason why Bernabe grew frustrated for not making a clean shot at the champion. But the “Late Punches” proved that Luevano cannot take Abe’s power punches.

If the fight not for disqualification and the fight had to stop, Luevano still would have won the fight via split decision. The scorecards after two of the three judges ruled in Luevano’s favor with Steve Morrow and CJ Ross scored 67-64 and 68-65 in favor of Luevano while Glenn Trowbridge saw the fight for Concepcion at 67-66.

The championi, who improved his fight record to 37-1-1 with 15 of his wins by way of knockout, said he is open to a rematch with Concepcion later this year. It was also Luevano’s fifth chance to successfully defend his title. With the experience that Concepcion had in this fight, we can look forward for a better match later this year. The rematch is initially scheduled on December.

In this lopsided fight, Abe admitted that he played cautiously because his oppponent was too cautious, too. He did not lose a round in all three scorecards. Before this fight, Herrera lost his last four fights.

Concepcion improved his record to 29-1-1(with 16 KOs) while Herrera fell to 22-7-0. And after this, he may have his shot at title, after all. Concepcion said a fight with Steven Luevano is being worked out although his handlers are still giving his next possible opponent ample time to fully recover from a shoulder injury sustained earlier this year.

“It could be him as my next opponent, but we’ve agreed to let him recover first,” said Concepcion, sporting a tiny bruise over his left eye, a result of Herrera’s continuous rubbing of the laced portion of his gloves.

“I feel okay. Everything’s okay. I’m happy with the win,” said Concepcion

Prolonged Fight?

Abe threw hard punches that rocked the opponent but it seemed like the Concepcion held back his follow up that lead to prolonging the fight.In his interview after the fight, the 20-year-old from Binangonan, Rizal said he knew from the first round that he could control the fight and that he can take the Kenyan’s punches.

What’s next for Abe

Based on Ronnie Nathanielz’ article at PhilBoxing.com, Abe may have the chance to take on WBO featherweight champion Steven Luevano. Luevano, a southpaw, is not regarded as a heavy puncher but is a talented boxer with a record of 36-1-1 with 15 knockouts. He may also be called to fight WBC champion Oscar Larios (63-6-1, 39 KO’s) who won over Takahiro Aoh last October in Japan. At any rate, it would be the best chance for Abe to fight on a world title bout.

In the interview with Abe’s manager, Aljoe Jaro, he said he is hoping that his boxer’s performance would land the young fighter a slot in the undercards for the Pacquiao-Hatton showdown in Las Vegas in May 2 if it will materialize. If ever, the supposed undercard will give Bernabe Concepcion a much needed boost to his popularity.
